How a telco business became a Christmas shed

For nearly thirty years, we ran a telecommunications service business. Then we reached one of those forks in the road — and took the one marked Christmas.

We could have bought a caravan and pointed it at the horizon. Plenty of people do, and good on them. But we're not really caravan people. We wanted to build something — and the something we kept circling back to was the one part of the year we'd loved the whole time.

Christmas was always the big one

In our house, the season started early and finished late. Out came the tree, up went the decorations, and Dom would spend the better part of a weekend stringing lights across the front of the house. (He still over-orders lights. Some things don't change.) It was in the middle of one of those over-the-top December set-ups that the idea finally said itself out loud: what if we did this for a living?

We told people. They said "you'll do what?"

When we shared the plan with family and friends, we got the raised eyebrows you'd expect — and then, once they saw we meant it, a genuine wave of support. That backing is a big part of why the Shed exists at all, and we haven't forgotten it.

Getting the Shed open

It took longer and cost more than we'll admit to here. There were twists, a couple of dead ends, and at least one afternoon where that caravan looked pretty tempting again. What never wavered was the reason we started — so neither did we.

The Shed today

Now we're a proper Archerfield destination, open right through the calendar. We still choose every piece ourselves, once a year — no buying team, no head office, just the two of us and a lot of opinions. Dom greets you at the door, prices the stock, fills the shelves and, when he thinks no one's watching, takes a selfie with an elf. Deb keeps the rest of it standing upright. Between us, that's the whole team.
